The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System is provided by the Department of Justice and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators to protect consumers trying to purchase a vehicle. The site shows important information about a vehicle’s history, including title data, the brand history, the odomotor reading, the total loss history, and salvage history. Used car buying tips, along with a glossary and FAQ’s are also included.

Freesound is a database of 120,000 sounds, not songs. The sounds can include anything from a pipe banging against the wall to water dripping. Many of the sounds have been used in movies and in ccMixter remixes. Keywords and “sounds-like” type of browsing are available for searching. From the site, “Freesound is a collaborative database of Creative Commons Licensed sounds. Browse, download and share sounds.”

This website – ifixit – is a great place to look up repair manuals – and edit them yourself. The site includes step-by-step repair guides for computers, game consoles, cell phones, automobiles, cameras, ipads, ipods, household appliances and other devices. Included in most manuals are pictures and diagrams. Explanations of the pictures are also available. There is also a place to ask questions and get answers to repair issues that you are not able to fix.

Searches can be done for specific models, makes, or years. Comprehensive pricing and financing information, along with side by side car comparisons are also available. Edmund’s has added a new feature to their site that allows consumers the opportunity to evaluate the true cost to own of a new vehicle. The calculator uses a formula to figure in vehicle, fuel, insurance, maintenance and repair costs over a five-year period to arrive at a total “cost to own.” Users can also compare similar vehicles.
