Flurbit is a search engine to look for events in the United States. Conference, museum, sporting, performing arts, and many other events are included. The subject and the location of the event can be searched for, as well as by date (daily, monthly, etc.) Each entry includes a date, time, location, and map of the event. The actual website posting is underneath the information about the event.

“The State of Children in Memphis & Shelby County: Data Book” provides statistics about the state of children in Memphis & Shelby County, Tennessee. Written by the Urban Child Institute, information is provided on education, demographics, health, family and home environment for children. Women in abusive relationships by zip code is also shown. Past Data Books going back to 2006 are listed.

The “Statistical Yearbook for Asia and the Pacific” is a new publication from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. This electronic resource provides statistical and demographic information, along with information on the economy, connectivity, and the environment in Asia. It shows key indicators and trends, as well as tables full of statistics on this region.

The Digital Research Library within the University Library System at the University of Pittsburgh has digitized Audubon’s Birds of America. The complete double elephant folio, along with his Ornithological Biography, has been included. Browsing by plate name or by thumbnails is shown, and a search box is provided.

The World Guide to Covered Bridges is a database produced by the National Center for Wood Transportation Structures at the Iowa State University Institute for Transportation. The database allows searching by bridge name, state, county, and the year the covered bridge was built. The results include if the bridge is private or if public access is allowed. A satellite view shows the location of the bridge on a map. Whether it is on the National Historic Landmarks list is also displayed, along with other field definitions.

Freesound is a database of 120,000 sounds, not songs. The sounds can include anything from a pipe banging against the wall to water dripping. Many of the sounds have been used in movies and in ccMixter remixes. Keywords and “sounds-like” type of browsing  are available for searching. Energy savers is a website from the U.S. Department of Energy. It provides energy saving information for remodeling, appliances, electronics, electricity, lighting, heating and cooling, and many other subjects. The website shows how you can get an energy assessment of your own home. There is also a place to get rebates for Energy Star appliances. Other resources include how to calculate your energy costs and a product library that can be perused.
