Hospital Compare is created by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). From the site, “Hospital Compare has information about the quality of care at over 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals across the country. You can use Hospital Compare to find hospitals and compare the quality of their care”.
Begin by typing in a city/state, state, or zip code. The hospital name can also be included. On the next page, you can choose up to three different hospitals to compare. Scroll towards the bottom of the page once you have chosen the hospitals and click “compare now”. A survey of patients’ experiences, the timely and effective care of the hospital, its complications, readmissions, and deaths, the use of medical imaging, payment and value of care, along with the number of medicare patients seen, are all included in the comparison. Some entries are only shown for the specific problem of the patient, for example, a heart attack. Tables and graphs are also included on some of the listings.
